Ice Breaker Mini-Cruises
The Sampo, one of the world's very few tourist icebreakers, operates on the northern Gulf of Bothnia out of the port of Kemi in southern Finnish Lapland. After serving for thirty years as an icebreaker in Arctic waters, the vessel has been given a new task – to act as a cruise ship for ice adventurers.
The Sampo sails from the middle of December to the end of April. Icebreaker excursions offer even the most diehard adventurers a healthy dose of excitement. The frozen Arctic landscape, the winter darkness, the crackling frost and the clear starry skies, often with the added spectacle of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, provide a unique experience. The excursion begins with a thrilling snowmobile ride to the icebreaker, followed by an introduction to the vital work of these ships in keeping Finnish trade moving. You can also try swimming in a waterproof thermal suit among the broken ice blocks. Guaranteed excitement, and a truly memorable experience.
