Cruises on Inland Waterways - Full steam ahead

The serene network of lakes and islands provides the perfect backdrop for summer in Finland’s Lakeland region. In addition to a wide range of local boat cruise opportunities, there is a scheduled boat service between Kuopio and Savonlinna. New waterways include the 90-kilometre Tahko Boating Route between Kuopio and the lively holiday resort of Tahko. Some ships offer cabin accommodation, adding a whole new dimension to the cruising experience.

Finnish summer, lake cruise on s/s Tarjanne

Lakeland adventures in Finland range from short expeditions lasting a couple of hours to leisurely tours with cabin accommodation that may last several days, and the vessels range from quaint lake steamers to open-top motor cruisers ideal for sightseeing.

An example route might take you from Nurmes at the northern end of the Saimaa lake system, through the Karelian lake ports of Lieksa and Joensuu, and finishing in Savonlinna, where passengers can spend an evening at the opera in the magnificent Olavinlinna fortress. Kuopio is another busy lake steamer port, from which tours depart across the network of eastern lakes and canals, offering both on-board and hotel accommodation along the way. Further west, lake steamers depart from Hämeenlinna, and also from Tampere on the Poet’s Way, heading north to Ruovesi and passing sites of Finnish literary interest.

Cruise ships usually serve refreshments, if not full scale meals, and there is no more relaxing way to enjoy the unspoilt and never-ending scenery of Finnish Lakeland.
