Skating

Have you ever tried skating across an ice covered lake? In Finland you can glide over mirrors of bright ice and enjoy skating over the surface of a frozen lake, river or sea in the freedom and tranquillity of a pure winter landscape. Long-distance skating allows you to combine the sheer joy of skating, the thrill of speed and changing scenery. The vast expanse of the lake ice glistening in the sun provides a great backdrop for outdoor recreation for the whole family.

Skating is an option just about anywhere across the whole country, on one of the thousands of lakes or on one of many indoor and outdoor rinks. Every winter the world's best marathon skaters gather in Kuopio in central Finland to compete against each other on the natural ice track on Lake Kallavesi. The Finland Ice Marathon, arranged since 1984, attracts thousands of recreational skaters as well as a large audience.

Even though it is usually safe to take to the ice alone, a guided skating trip will help you to get more out of the experience. Equipment for skating can be hired. Depending on the weather conditions, the skating season might begin at the end of October and last until April. High season is January-March.
