Nightwish’s Band Leader Loves Hiking
Tuomas Holopainen is the main songwriter, band leader and keyboardist of Nightwish, a Finnish symphonic metal band with over 7 million albums sold worldwide. Touring with his band Tuomas has travelled the world only to discover that Finland is the best place on Earth. Tuomas describes himself as an escapist and he is a big fan of fantasy and cartoons. Taking time off his busy rock star life, Tuomas enjoys escaping the hustle and bustle of big cities and retreating to deserted places to both relax and challenge himself in demanding hiking trails.
Leader figure of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen recommends:
1. Taivaanvalkeat is where Nightwish stayed earlier this year after their world tour to relax and recharge their batteries. Taivaanvalkeat is an ideal place to experience the magic of Lapland.
“I find Lapland and the fairytale-like world of Taivaanvalkeat inspiring. Its quiet country surroundings offer rustic style accommodation and heavenly food for travellers looking for something different to experience.”
2. Herajärvi hiking trail, Koli. For Tuomas hiking is a sort of a purification ritual both physically and mentally. It is a chance to escape crowds and find peace and quiet and physical challenge. Herajärvi hiking trail is a demanding hike through the forests and hills around Lake Herajärvi in the beautiful national landscape. Some hiking trails are too busy for Tuomas’ taste – he once managed to go hiking for three days without seeing anyone, which he thought was great.
“Hiking for me is about solitude, sweat, challenge, long trips and asceticism.”
3. Café Regatta, Helsinki . Café Regatta is a tiny red cottage at a beautiful spot by the sea in Helsinki just next to the Töölö Rowing Stadium.
“The place reminds me of the Moomins. There is such a special atmosphere which you have to experience for yourself. You can enjoy a cup of coffee and delicious cinnamon rolls in the tiny cottage or at the terrace outside. There is also an open fire outside where you can cook sausages. It’s also possible to rent a canoe to explore the beautiful scenery offshore. You can only pay in cash at Regatta, which is rare in Finland, but if needed, they even lend money for their customers, of whom 99 % will come and pay back. It is also the only café in the world where you will get paid for having a second cup of coffee.”
