Rustic Romantic - Bed & Breakfasts in Fiskars and Porvoo
Within a good hour from Helsinki international airport, B&B’s in Porvoo and Fiskars are idyllic destinations for some rustic romanticism in the Finnish countryside.
Porvoo lies less than an hour east of Helsinki. With history dating back to the 14th century, the Old Town of Porvoo is charm defined. The area around Porvoo is famous for its manors and archipelago. An hour and a half west of Helsinki, Fiskars village is a picturesque design, art and craft centre. Here, the eponymous household and gardening equipment business started as an ironworks in 1649. 15 kilometres from Porvoo, B&B Strandhagen is a quiet retreat by the Baltic Sea. There are four beautifully decorated rooms to choose from – the Green, Yellow and Brown rooms as well as the Cigar Salon. The Strandhagen experience is all about quality – freshly baked bread, home baked cookies, tea and coffee served out of porcelain pots and so on.
The nearby Virvik area has a golf course, beach and nature trails in forests – get to know the area by borrowing a bicycle from the B&B.
Right in the heart of Fiskars village, this former laundry is now a home, a ceramic workshop, a design studio, and a B&B. The two rooms both accommodate two people, and the lounge area is shared. Inside the red brick building, an air of decades-old Finnish countryside living – although renovated and sprinkled with Finnish design – greets the guests.
The lovely setting by the Fiskars River is ideal for a summer breakfast out in the garden or on the veranda.
After a good night’s sleep in the comfortable beds of the B&B, there’s plenty to explore in Fiskars village. With its shops, studios, workshops and exhibitions, Fiskars today is a center for art, craft and design. Fiskars is home to more than a hundred creative people, and most definitely a unique place to visit.
B&B Tukkilan Tila, Porvoo
This family farm in the Porvoo river valley offers accommodation in the cosy rooms of the main building, the rustic cottage or the granaries, of which the oldest was built more than a hundred years ago. At Tukkilan Tila, there a features that will certainly melt all guests’ hearts. Finnhorses are bred on the farm, and donkeys – well, they’re just downright cute, aren’t they?
The smoke sauna on the farm is also more than a century old.
Even llamas are bred on the farm, and they’re suitable for treks and agility. For dog lovers, the farm’s Afghan Hounds will surely do the trick.
B&B Villa Taika, Fiskars (Antskog)
Four kilometres from Fiskars village, Villa Taika in the tiny village of Antskog is a beautiful old wooden house that used to be a local school. In the garden, a pond and a waterfall contribute to a soothing stay. The Billnäs ironworks and Mustio Castle both lie only 15 kilometres away.
The eight individually decorated rooms of Villa Taika are inspired by Oriental design, and there’s a lake view from both sides of the house.
When you’re relaxed and revitalized and want to get down to some action, there’s plenty of it available around Villa Taika: swimming in lakes, as well as rowing and fishing, hiking or cycling in the woods, and visiting nearby sights such as the Billnäs ironworks village, the old towns of Tammisaari and Hanko, or the castles of Raasepori and Mustio
Old Porvoo is one of Finland’s most idyllic districts. The cobbled streets are lined with old, doll-house-like houses and on top of the hill a white stone church looks over the river valley. Wonderful in the summer, magical during wintertime. Only one hour East of Helsinki.
