Cabins and cottages are an essential element in Finnish life. Forgetting the daily grind is inevitable in retreats amidst the country's greatest resource: rugged natural beauty. Heat up the sauna and get cosy in front of the fireplace in the winter, rest and revitalisation are guaranteed.
Explore the Beautiful Winter Wonderland
Finland has more of the white stuff than just about anywhere else in Europe, and nobody knows better than Finns how to make the most of this annual asset. From the Alpine ski slopes of Arctic Lapland to the well-marked cross country tracks in every part of the country, from the reindeer and snowmobile safari adventures to snowboarding and ice hotels, when it comes to snow, Finland is as cool as it gets.
Winter in Fabulous Forest and Lakeland Scenery
Kuopio is eastern Finland's largest city and a third of its surface area is water, providing one of the country's most popular natural skating rinks for much of the year. Skating tracks on the frozen lake ice are prepared in February and maintained through March.
Cross-country skiing opportunities in the Kuopio region also are excellent, and there are hundreds of kilometres of well-maintained and illuminated cross-country ski trails in fabulous forest and lakeland scenery. Ski centres in the Kuopio region offer slopes for all skill levels and preferences, both for families with children and advanced skiers seeking challenges. Snowmobile and husky safaris, snowshoeing, ice-fishing, abseiling and ice-swimming are other popular options. Kuopio is also host to World Cup competitions in ski jumping. Kuopio is especially renowned for its large and lively market square, where kalakukko (a delicacy of fish and bacon baked into a rye bread loaf) and fried vendace are sold. You can also visit the Puijo hill, with its observation tower and spectacular views. Did you know…? The Finland Ice Marathon, held every February on the ice at Kuopio, attracts competitors from the Nordic countries, France, The Netherlands, Canada, the USA, Estonia and Russia. The major event in the Marathon festival is the 200 kilometre race on a loop that starts and finishes near Kuopio's passenger harbour.
