The Amazing Aurora Borealis!

An ancient Finnish myth explained that the northern lights were caused when a fox ran through the hills in Lapland and waved its tail so that the sparks hit the sky.

Nowadays we know that the northern lights, otherwise known as the Aurora borealis, are the result of electrically charged particles of the solar wind entering the earth's atmosphere. On earth we can experience this activity as a light show of various colors and figures.

The best time to admire the northern lights is in the autumn or winter - due to the bright summer nights they are hard to spot during summertime. The further away one travels from the equator the easier it is to observe them on the sky. During the winter months the northern lights can be seen in Lapland almost every day.

In September strong solar storms occurred on the sun which we were able to admire almost everywhere in Finland. Solar activity will still be rising during the next years promising that we will be able to observe and enjoy the northern lights also in the future.

A good possibility to experience this wonderful natural phenomenon is to rent a cottage through Lomarengas, Finnish Country Holidays, and to travel to Finland. You can get the first impression of this nature's own amazing show under cottage.visitfinland.com or www.lomarengas.fi/cottages.
