Experience the whole world on one island! Korkeasaari is worth a visit at any time of the year: 80 per cent of the zoo´s animals don´t hibernate and indeed, the zoo has a special magic about it in the tranquillity of winter.
At the Helsinki Zoo you can embark on a thrilling journey through a multitude of exciting habitats from barren tundras to lush rainforest and from majestic mountaintops to mysterious wetlands.
The diversity of nature at the zoo is dispalayed by 150 different animal species as well as almost 1000 different species of plants. The different zones include Amazonia, Africasia and Borealia for instance. Korkeasaari is mainly inhabited by northern species of animals, but it has animals from all over the world, including endangered rain forest species, lesser pandas, monkeys and large carnivores like snow leopards and Amur tigers. Northern rarities such as the Arctic fox, European forest reindeer, musk ox and snowy owl can all be seen in Korkeasaari. The Helsinki Zoo opened in 1889 and it is situated on an island freshened by seawinds. Some of the special events in Korkeasaari include Owls' Night in March, Cats' Nights in September, Twilight Tours in October-November and Christmas Route in December-January. Restaurants at the zoo entrance and on the island serve during the opening hours. Both snacks and warm meals are available.
