Häme Castle
Hämeen Linna
Häme Castle is one of Finland´s medieval royal castles. The castle houses the "Terra Tavestorum" exhibition, which relates the prehistory of Häme. There are also temporary exhibitions.
The Häme castle has been built mostly of brick. Construction started around 1260 in response to the growing threat from Novgorod. The keep is fortified by an outer wall (14th century), a gun turret (16th century), a moat (17th century) and bastions and service buildings (18th century). An important part of Finland's defence system, the castle, surrounded by prison and garrison from the late 19th century, was restored between 1953 and 1988. The castle now houses exhibitions of Finnish National Museum and is a venue for cultural events.
