Bird Watching and Photography
You can see many species of birds in Finland that are very rare elsewhere in Europe. There's also a huge variety: seabirds along the coast; Cranes and Whooper Swans in the lakes and wetlands; Capercaillie and several species of Woodpeckers in the northern forests; Owls and Eagles in Lapland; and tundra species such as Dotterel, Ptarmigan and Gyrfalcon in the treeless northernmost fells of Lapland.
The Liminganlahti Reserve near Oulu is world-famous among birdwatchers. Particularly during the spring migration you can see masses of Wigeon, Teal and Scaup, Common Cranes and Whooper Swan, as well Marsh Harriers and Osprey. In fact, a list of the birds you could see there would almost fill this page.

If you're in Helsinki for a day or two in the spring or autumn, you can take off for a few hours to see the spring migration. Many species of water birds and waders, flying north across the Baltic, stop for a rest on the peninsulas west of Helsinki.
