Boating, Rowing and Sailing
A look at the map will tell you why there are so many boats in Finland. In the Baltic there are so many islands that sometimes there's more land than sea. When you go inland, it's like a mirror image. There are so many lakes that sometimes there is more water than land.
The waters of the Baltic are challenging for sailors. There are many rocks and reefs just below the surface. Many of them have a name and a story to go with it.
When you are navigating in the Finnish archipelago, you will need up-to-date charts. Fortunately, these waters are well charted and the channels are well-marked. The Finnish Maritime Administration produces general charts for open sea sailing, coastal charts for sailing in the archipelago and inland waters, and special charts for harbor traffic. A series of nautical charts is also produced particularly for boating enthusiasts. You can also rent a boat with a skipper who, of course, knows these waters like his own hand.
New waterways include the 90-kilometre Tahko Boating Route between Kuopio and the holiday resort of Tahko.
