Nordic Walking

Summertime in Finland. The sun is shining and the temperature is 25 degrees centigrade. So why are so many people skiing? And why have they forgotten their skis?

Do not be alarmed. They are taking part in a sport called Nordic Walking, which was invented in Finland. Walking with ski poles is excellent aerobic exercise that improves your upper-body fitness. It's also very simple and democratic: all you need are the poles and a path, and off you go. It's a great all-weather activity, too.

In Finland, the terrain lends itself perfectly to Nordic Walking. You can head off at your own pace through the network of forest tracks on the edge of every Finnish town and city, and in many city parks. Or if you feel like something more strenuous, you can head out for the hills of Lapland.
