Espoo city politicians show support for the international meetings industry

Espoo has long traditions in hosting international conferences. By signing the agreement the City of Espoo wants to show that it is publicly committed to supporting the meetings and events industry internationally. In 1994, the City of Espoo and Aalto University (by then it was called Helsinki University of Technology) signed an agreement to have more cooperation between the city and the university and to eventually result in getting more scientific conferences to Espoo.

Yet another step towards building more effective partnership between the scientific community in Espoo and the city was the launch of EspooAmbassador -programme in 2009. In this Ambassador programme the City Mayor Jukka Mäkelä has an active role by hosting an annual event for scientific community where the ambassador award is also given.

Cooperation between the city and scientific community is the city receptions, where the city welcomes all conference participants to Espoo by delivering a welcome speech and some refreshments. In Espoo, we have been happy to have active city officials but also politicians to deliver the welcome words. This has been the Espoo way to develop the association between the City of Espoo, the whole scientific community and the politicians so the signing of this important Declaration of Support is yet another demonstration of the importance of international conferences to Espoo.

Another record year for congresses in Finland

2017 saw more congresses organised in Finland than ever before. Last year totalled 791 congresses for international organisations with a record-breaking 111,188 guests, an increase of 22% from the previous year.

Most of the congresses were held in the Helsinki region. For 2017, the number of congresses in Helsinki increased by 28% and by 54% in Espoo. Tampere, Turku and Jyväskylä maintained their ranking among the top five cities to host congresses in terms of guests. Jyväskylä and Kuopio also showed a positive trend by hosting more congresses and guests than in previous years.

“This is the second year in a row that we’ve seen substantial growth for both the number of congresses and guests. The processes involved can be lengthy and international competition is fierce. Therefore these results are definitely a sign of long-term success with procurement”, says Mervi Toivonen from Business Finland’s Finland Convention Bureau.
