Finland Marks Record Congress Year

Latest statistics by Finland Convention Bureau (FCB) show that a record-breaking 635 international congresses were held in Finland in 2012. The number of attending delegates reached 77 222.

Compared to previous years, the number of international congresses organized in Finland went up by approximately 60 per cent.

A key factor in the impressive rise in total congress numbers is the excellent co-operation between institutes of higher education and various organizations.

City convention bureaus work closely with FCB and branches of industry. In addition, regional congress organizations have great processes in place for gathering statistical data. Recently set up Congress Network Finland is an organization aiming to develop the congress industry and educate professionals in the field.

– Information sharing, industry meetings, education and networking have been keywords among Finnish congress professionals of late. The whole industry has drawn from previous years’ experiences and started working together towards increasing figures with great results, says Leena Sipilä, Convention Director at FCB.

In 2013, FCB is carrying out a detailed survey on congress delegates, aiming to further investigate delegates’ use of money as well as their impressions of Finland as a congress destination. Another main objective is to investigate the effects congresses have on local income and employment.

Congress travel in Finland grows despite overall decline

Finland Convention Bureau (FCB), a part of Finpro, supports the organisation of international congresses in Finland. The past year was the best congress year in Finnish history, with growth in the field persisting for years.

The number of congresses held in Finland has grown, despite the economic decline, from 595 conventions in 2012 to the current 708. The previous year saw attendance figures of 79,000, which meant a tourism income of €130 million. The corresponding income for 2010 was €72 million.
The Helsinki region hosts over half of these international congresses – significant events are, however, held in all of the largest cities throughout the year.

TOP Five congress cities:
1.Helsinki, 2.Espoo, 3.Tampere, 4.Turku, 5.Jyväskylä
FCB’s Convention Director, Leena Sipilä is extremely happy with this growth.
“Our previous best year had been 2013, but last year exceeded even 2013’s figures, despite our fears that the economic decline would take its toll,” says Sipilä, clearly pleased. “We are more than happy.” Congress travel is a positive exception in Finland’s economic situation, especially compared to tourism in general, whose growth rate is declining. The massive decline in Russian tourists has been challenging to leisure travel companies, who are now trying to attract new growth in Europe and Asia. Congress travel agents have also realised the possibilities for growth in the Asian market.
“We are organising our first corporate event marketing show in China, because we believe there are new opportunities and customers to be found there,” says Sipilä.
