Description

Söderfjärden is an approximately 520 million years old meteorite impact crater near the city of Vaasa. It is one of the most interesting geological phenomena Finland has to offer.  During the long history of the crater, life on earth has developed from simple organisms to today’s nature. Söderfjärden is nowadays a fertile, open field and there are in all 2 300 hectares of arable land.

But Söderfjärden is also a paradise for birds. Cranes rest in the area for several weeks during their migration, especially in autumn. Then you can see, on a good day, 7000-10 000 cranes spotting the fields of the crater. That makes Söderfjärden by far the most important resting place for cranes in Finland. In the evening the cranes fly away to spend the night in the archipelago.

The Meteoria visitor center is in the centre of the Söderfjärden meteorite crater. An exhibition illustrates the facinating  history of the crater and the development of the nature from the meteorite impact to today’s agricultural landscape and Natura 2000 -area(=nature protection network) . There is also a high standard observatory and a bird tower.
