Outdoor Winter Swimming

Finland has some 120,000 ice-hole swimmers and its popularity is still growing. For the first timer, ice hole swimming is a surprisingly pleasant and memorable experience.


For ice hole swimming you need a frozen patch of a lake or the sea with a sufficiently large aperture cut into it, and it’s an advantage to have access to a warm dressing room and sauna. You change into your swimming suit, take a deep breath and either take a quick plunge or swim for a few minutes at a time, then return to the warmth of the sauna.

The freezing cold, bare skin and freezing water are an amazing combination which will make you feel fresh throughout the day. Sounds crazy, but it’s true. Some even claim it helps build resistance to the common flu.
