Kitee - Ilomantsi - Lieksa
KITEE > ILOMANTSI (93 km) | | | Ilomantsi is the most Kalevala-oriented (Kalevala is Finland’s national epic) municipality in North Karelia. Here you will find the bardic village of Parppeinvaara with a permanent Kalevala exhibit and live kantele music every day during the summer. You can buy berry wines at the Hermanni winery. If you collect extreme places, you have the easternmost point of the continental European Union at Lake Virmajärvi.
From Ilomantsi, the tour continues along route 522 to Lieksa. The beautiful village of Hattuvaara is also well worth a visit. In Hattuvaara there is an Orthodox prayer house (tsasouna) dating from the 18th century and the Fighter’s House, a memorial dedicated to war veterans. The tsasouna is a small typical plain wilderness chapel that was used by the pious in the old days. The last battles between Finland and the Soviet Union were fought in Hattuvaara in the summer of 1944.
ILOMANTSI > LIEKSA (102 km)
On the Ilomantsi-Lieksa motorway in Kitsi is a privately-operated farm museum. There you can view a large number of old power saws, some lovingly restored mopeds and tractors. | | | Lieksa offers fine hiking trails for nature enthusiasts. The Ruunaa rapids area offers canoeing, fishing and whitewater rafting services with experienced guides.
From Lieksa, we recommend that you take a trip to Vuoniskylät. Take route 73 south and turn on to route 5071. Vuoniskylät is a delightful group of small villages along the bank of Lake Pielinen, along the old merchant road that stretched from Ladoga to Oulu.
Don’t miss the steep hills of Koli National Park! Koli is one of the region’s most famous attractions and, with its beautiful nature; it is one of Finland’s national symbols. In the summer, there are daily car ferries across Lake Pielinen from Lieksa to Koli. Koli National Park, including the Heritage Centre Ukko, offers exhibits and audiovisual programmes at the top of Koli. |
