Via Karelia Route Touring
Kuhmo - Suomussalmi - Kuusamo - Salla

KUHMO > LENTIIRA > SUOMUSSALMI (136 km)
Route 912 heads towards the northeast to a beautiful area with a crystal-clear lake in Lentiira. Close to the border, along route 912, are the only genuinely Karelian villages that remain in Finland: Kuivajärvi and Hietajärvi. In the Domnan Pirtti building there is an exhibit that displays the ancient tradition of poetic songs and mournful songs of the Russian Karelia.

From Lentiira, the Tour continues to the Raate museum area, 60 km along route 912. There is an important monument of the Winter War 1939-40 in the Raate museum area. The Jalonniemi House, close to E63, houses a prehistoric exhibit of some of the oldest settlements in Finland.

SUOMUSSALMI > KUUSAMO (134 km)
If you take route 5 north from Suomussalmi, you pass the magnificent Lake Kiantajärvi, a source of inspiration for many storytellers and poets. Just next to the road, 30 km north of Suomussalmi, there is an impressive artwork called “Hiljainen Kansa” (The Silent People). It consists of thousands of human-like figures with bodies of hay, head of peat and dressed in old clothes that flap quietly in the wind.

Kuusamo is well-known for its wild and beautiful nature. Most of the beauty spots are located in the Oulanka National Park. Here you find Finland’s most famous trekking trail, The Karhunkierros Trail. More information on Kuusamo you will find from the chapture Midnight Sun Tour of Lapland.

KUUSAMO > SALLA (114 km)
The Via Karelia Tour continues along route 63 to Sompsanperä and from there to route 950.

Salla is a holiday centre for the entire family. The unbroken peace of the northern nature and a great offering of activities guarantee an unforgettable holiday. We recommend a visit to the Salla Reindeer Park. There is a café, a souvenir shop, exhibits and a safari centre, tel. +358 (0)16 837 771. www.salla.fi.
Here ends the Via Karelia Tour. If you continue the 82 from Salla to Kemijärvi, you can join the Midnight Sun Tour of Lapland.
