KALAJOKI > RAAHE (58 km)
Route 8 will take you to Raahe.
| Raahe: Old Raahe is one of the best-preserved wooden house towns of 19th century Finland. The area consists of 150 houses and 200 outbuildings. This is not a museum, but rather a part of town that is very much alive with single-family residences. | | | Raahe Maritime Museum – The collections illustrate the history of Raahe as a town for seafarers and shipbuilders. The foremost treasure of the museum is the world’s oldest diving suit “Wanha Herra” (the old gentleman) made entirely of leather, dating from the late 18th century.
Kauppaporvari – a unique combination of cultural, training and business services - Kauppaporvari is a culture and business centre with versatile facilities for organising conferences, training courses and congresses as well as for staging theatrical, musical or other cultural events.
Kari Juva Sculpture Park – Respected sculptor Kari Juva Sculpture Park will be opened to the artist’s home district in summer 2008. This open-air gallery consists of 30 sculptures and it is situated in the middle of the town. | | | RAAHE > OULU ( 75 km)
Continue along route 8 to Oulu. About 25 km before you reach Oulu, you will find the delightful cultural heritage landscapes of the Liminka plains, Finland’s most important wetlands for birdwatchers.
| Oulu, founded in 1605, is the largest city in northern Scandinavia. The town is known near and far as a centre of high-tech and commerce. The University of Oulu with its many international contacts and its lively cultural life is the heart of modern Oulu. The charming island of Pikisaari opposite the market place is well worth a visit. On the market place there are a number of 18th century barns, which nowadays house cafés and restaurants. | | | The Cathedral, designed by C.L. Engel, was completed in 1832 and is open to visitors.
Two very popular areas, Karjasilta and Raksila, only two kilometres from the city centre, represent the wooden house architecture and town planning that were typical for the 1920s and 1940s.
Two interesting places to visit close to Oulu are the Turkansaari Open-Air Museum that illustrates how people in the area lived during the 17th and 18th century, and Kierikki, 40 km along route 849. Kierikki consists of a brand new and modern log building where they talk about life in the Stone Age village of Yli-Ii. The building itself is an interesting example of Finnish wooden house architecture and how to use logs when constructing houses. www.kierikki.fi.
