Camping and Caravaning
Camping sites are usually located in attractive surroundings, almost always by water, whether lake, river or sea. Rowing, canoeing, fishing and hiking are just some of the things you can do while staying at a camping site. There are about 330 camping sites in Finland evenly distributed over the whole country. About 200 of them belong to the Finnish Campingsite Association's national network. Most sites also have cabins in addition to tent and caravan pitches.
English or German are usually spoken by the people running the sites, which are easily identified by the blue and white sign bearing a picture of a tent inside a large white C. Road signs indicating camping sites are marked according to international practice. Camping outside camping sites is forbidden without the permission of the landowner, as is the lighting of fires in the countryside.
Butane gas is not available in Finland. If you use bottled gas, make sure you have enough with you for your stay, because foreign containers will not be exchanged in Finland.
Camping season: The peak camping season in Finland is from mid June to the beginning of August or September, and it’s wise to make reservations at this time. Camping is possible in southern Finland for three months and in northern Finland for about two months. However, the camping sites are open much longer, and there are 70 which stay open the whole year round.
Camping cabins: There are many camping sites where a party of campers can stay overnight in inexpensive cabins or holiday cottages if the stay is a longer one. In the camping cabins there are usually beds for 2-6 people, a hotplate or stove, a refrigerator, a table and chairs and heating facilities. The holiday cottages have, in addition, cutlery and china and sometimes a sauna. It’s a good idea to take your own bedclothes to the camping cottage although the kiosks on some sites sell disposable sheets. During the peak season there is a demand for holiday cottages so it is advisable to book in advance. The prices of camping cabins range between 30 and 70 euros a night, and those of holiday cottages from 40 euros upwards, depending on the services. You will need a Camping Card Scandinavia or international (FICC) camping card. You can buy your membership card (Camping Card Scandinavia ) from any Finnish camping site.
Caravans: In summer there are about 300 sites where caravans can be linked to the electricity supply (220 V). In winter there are about 100 such places at winter sports centres, holiday villages, hostels and hotels. Caravans are available for hire in Finland: ask at local tourist information offices for further information. On main roads the speed limit for motorists with a caravan is 80 km/h. Remember that Finnish service stations do not replace empty foreign gas cylinders.
Recreation facilities include water-skiing, windsurfing, riding, guided canoe or motor boat tours, fishing and hunting trips, boats for hire and jogging paths. On small, more remote sites you can enjoy profound peace and relaxation.
Prices: Camping sites charge between 10 euros and 25 euros a night, depending on the amenities available. This covers the cost for the whole family (maximum two adults plus children), the tent, caravan or motorhome pitch, plus basic camping site services.
Camping Card Scandinavia
A Camping Card Scandinavia or an international camping card (FICC) are valid in Finland. Campers should buy a family camping card at the first site where they intend to stay.
