Horseback Riding
Saddle-Top View of Finland
Wilderness riding tours give you the chance to penetrate the depths of Finland’s forests and to venture into parts of the unspoilt landscape that may be too challenging to reach on foot. North-eastern Finland, specifically the Oulanka National Park, is a favourite territory for horseback treks. This region, just to the south of the Arctic Circle and close to the Russian border, includes rugged ridges and river valleys, rapids and canyons, and thick forests and marshlands, and there’s a good chance of spotting wildlife, including deer and birds. This is the location of the Bears’ Ring trail, but only very rarely will you see the reclusive creatures after which it is named. On horseback, you’ll get the closest views and experiences of some of Finland’s most spectacular and dramatic scenery.
The Finnish horses that take you on these treks are friendly and hard-working, able to tackle the steepest slopes and river crossings, but like you, they benefit from plenty of rest stops along your trail. Overnights are usually spent in cabins or huts, with comfortable hotels at either end of the trek.
