Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is one of Finland's most popular sports. There are plenty of excellent trails from which to choose. There can be no more delightful way of exploring the winter landscape than on cross-country skis. To glide through the silent forests or across the treeless slopes of the Arctic hills, with the winter landscapes glittering in their white blanket of snow, is an unforgettable experience. Illuminated trails allow you to extend your skiing pleasure long into the night.

Finland activities, cross-country skiing in the fells of Lapland

There are tens of thousands of kilometres of marked and well-maintained ski trails in Finland. These include family-friendly trails and more demanding trails for experienced skiers, and special ski tours recommended for thrill-seekers in top physical condition. What’s more, the ski trails are free for all to enjoy.

The peak season for skiing is February-March in southern and central Finland and March-April in Lapland. In the north-western corner of Lapland - the Kilpisjärvi area - the season extends well into May. Lessons in cross-country skiing are given in major ski centres, where skiing equipment is nearly always available for hire.
