Hostels

The Finnish Youth Hostel Association's hostel chain (Hostelling International Finland) comprises 88 hostels, including youth hostels, family hostels, Finnhostels and summer hotels.

They all belong to the Hostelling International Finland chain. Hostelling International Finland Hostels provide comfortable accommodation where budget-minded travellers can stay for one night or longer. The hostels vary in both standard and type. Some are in towns, others in small farmhouses or manor houses, and in student hostels, university students quarters, course centres or camping sites.

Key Hostels: There are seven Key Hostels, in Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Lappeenranta, Tampere and Turku. Key hostels offer low-cost accommodation all year round. At Key Hostels you only pay for the services you need. Each hostel has its own unique character and as a chain Key Hostels offer travellers fair benefits. BENEFIT: Key Hostels will always take care of your booking for the next Key Hostel.

Season: More than half of the Hostelling International Finland Hostels are open all year, and the rest during the summer season.

Facilities: Hostelling International Finland Hostels are ideal for families: with accommodation ranging from double rooms to rooms sleeping 4-6 persons. Most Hostelling International Finland Hostels have a common room, laundry facilities and self-catering kitchen. Many also have a breakfast room, coffee bar or restaurant. Breakfast costs 4-6 euros per person. Some hostels hire out boats, canoes, sailboard and bicycles. The Hostelling International Finland Hostels offer many activities such as fishing, trekking, berry/mushroom picking, skiing and - of course - visiting a genuine Finnish sauna.

Prices: The average overnight charges vary between 10 and 50.50 euros per person, depending on the type of accommodation. If bed linen is not included in the rates it can be hired for an additional charge of 3-7 euros. Many Hostelling International Finland Hostels have special prices for families. Holders of a Hostelling International Card, which can be obtained from the visitor's own national hostel association or on arrival in Finland from the Hostelling International Finland Office in Helsinki (17 euros) entitles holders to a reduction of 2.5 euros per person per night and also to a wide range of other discounts in Finland. Note, however, that the card is not obligatory for those wishing to stay in Hostelling International Finland hostels.

Hostelling International Finland Hostels are easy to find because signposts leading to them bear the international triangle symbol of the IYHF (International Youth Hostel Federation). All hostels in the Hostelling International Finland Hostel chain are indicated with the triangular symbol. The Hostelling International Finland Hostel chain publishes yearly valuable information on facilities in hostels and hints on 'hostelling' in Finland. The material is obtainable from Hostelling International Finland Hostels, youth hostel associations abroad or directly from SRM.

SRM Hostel Packages: The Hostelling International Finland Hostel chain sells 'Go-as-you-please' hostel packages for travelling by rental bicycle or rental car.
