Day 4: Nurmes - Iisalmi - Kuopio

NURMES > IISALMI (121 km)
Iisalmi is a city with a lot of humour, warm hospitality and a rich cultural heritage. The Iisalmi region is characterised by its beautiful landscape: lakes of great natural beauty, thick vegetation along the riverbanks and a varying terrain that makes the area an excellent location for active holidays. The sights in the Iisalmi region include both national treasures and local specialties. www.iisalmi.fi/matkailumarkkinointi
We recommend: The world’s smallest restaurant, Kuappi.

Satisfy your thirst at Kuappi in Iisalmi Harbour. The restaurant and the open-air restaurant each seat two people. The restaurant’s total size is 3.6 square metres. Open in June and July. Meals must be ordered in advance. Nearby, there is the Olutmestari restaurant, which is open from May through August.

The Brewery Museum: The Museum provides you with a fantastic opportunity to learn everything about the brewery business, the beer-brewing process and the history of the Olvi brewery.

Oluset Beer Festival July 11–12, 2008

IISALMI > LAPINLAHTI (25 km)
We recommend: Lapinlahti Art Museum and Eemil Halonen Museum.

Art lovers will find several sights in Lapinlahti. The works by the Halonen family (paintings, sculptures) are exhibited at these museums. The Lapinlahti Art Museum is also worth a visit because of its high-quality exhibits.

LAPINLAHTI > KUOPIO (60 km)
Kuopio is eastern Finland’s largest city with an easygoing atmosphere. Kuopio is renowned for its famous Puijo Tower with a spectacular lakeland view, for its busy market square with the local delicacy “kalakukko” and for its beautiful passenger harbour with a wide range of boat cruises. www.kuopioinfo.fi
The package contains A local cruise, entrance to the Puijo Tower and a Museum Card.

We recommend:

Kuopio Museums: the Kuopio Museum, the Old Kuopio Museum, the Kuopio Art Museum, the Orthodox Church Museum of Finland, the VB Photographic Centre and the JV Snellman Home Museum.

Puijo Tower: The Puijo tower is 75 metres tall and has a rotating restaurant with a panorama view. The restaurant serves local specialties and has special menus, a café, an open-view platform and a souvenir shop. The view from the tower over the surrounding lake landscape and Kuopio is breathtakingly beautiful.

Cruise on the Lake Kallavesi: there are a wide range of boat cruises daily from the Kuopio Passenger Harbour.

Traditional Finnish Evening at the Lumberjacks’ Lodge Jätkänkämppä on Tuesdays and Thursdays including dinner, smoke sauna, lumberjack’s show, accordionist, singsong and dance.
