INARI > LEVI (about 190 km)

From Inari, route 955 continues to Levi, a genuine wilderness route to western Lapland via Lemmenjoki National Park. This park is 2,855 km² and it is the largest of all national parks in Finland and represents the original Lapland with its wilderness, its forests, marshlands and fells. There are no service stops along this road so please make sure you have enough supplies before you start this trip.

Levi in Kittilä is full of activities for the entire family: hiking, swimming, rollerblading and marked hiking trails. Traditionally, the Midsummer celebrations are arranged at Tuikku, at the top of Levi fell. Finland’s first gondola lift operates the entire summer and brings you to the top of Levi where you can admire the enchanting view. Here you can sled even in the summer, an activity that is very popular among the visitors. The new golf course will be completed in August 2008.

Kittilän Eräkeskus (Wilderness Centre) in Kittilä is a Sámi farm with cows and reindeer. The family arranges guided fish trips and hunting expeditions and hires canoes, boats, bicycles and sauna cottages on the lakeshore.

LEVI > ROVANIEMI (170 km)

From Levi you will take route 79 to Rovaniemi. We recommend a visit to the Särestöniemi Museum, about 25 km south of Kittilä in the village of Kaukonen. The museum shows the intensely colourful paintings by famous, local artist Reidar Särestöniemi. This museum houses the artist’s studio, a gallery, a café and old Särestö, tel. +358 (0)16 654 480.

On the way to Rovaniemi you can take a break in Lohiniva and enjoy the view where Pahtajoki River and Ounasjoki River join. The area is excellent for fishing.

Rovaniemi is situated at the confluence of two of Lapland’s mighty rivers, Kemijoki River and Ounasjoki River which give the Lappish capital a strong water theme. Summertime Rovaniemi is a diverse tourist destination. Try some of the many activities: hiking, riverboat cruise, visit to the reindeer farm etc.
Arktikum is a scientific centre and a museum, specialising in Lapland and the Arctic regions. The exhibit illustrates the living conditions of the people who live north of the Arctic Circle, their customs and traditions, their culture, nature and history. Within Arktikum, there is also a café-restaurant, a library and a museum shop, tel. +358 (0)16 322 3260.

Santa Claus’ main post office is situated at the Arctic Circle, close to Rovaniemi, in the Santa Claus’ Village. You can leave your Christmas greetings here even during the summer. Your letters and postcards will be stamped with genuine Arctic Circle stamps and Santa Claus’ diligent helpers ensure that they will get delivered in good time for Christmas, for a birthday or another special day. Santa Claus’ Village, Arctic Circle, tel. +358 (0)20 452 3120.

On Saturday 19.7.2008 it’s time for “Crazy about Santa Claus”!
What happens in Rovaniemi? Snow in the middle of summer, Santa Claus, elves, skiing competition for children, kick sledge drag race and many other peculiar events with Santa Claus. Has the world turned upside down? You will hear Christmas music and enjoy Christmas delicacies, even see the Christmas tree. The whole town is crazy about Santa Claus, in the middle of the warmest summer season!
