Eastern King's Road: Helsinki - Porvoo
HELSINKI > PORVOO (50 km)
Porvoo is located about half an hour by car from Helsinki on motorway E18. | | | Porvoo (Borgå) is a small town, the second oldest one in Finland and famous for its cultural heritage. In the well-preserved Old Town is the majestic Cathedral surrounded by charming houses from the 18th century lining the small cobbled streets.
The regular bus traffic between Helsinki and Porvoo is a fast and convenient option if you do not want to drive yourself. If you want to experience the romantic atmosphere of times gone by, you can travel by boat along the coast or on the museum train. During the summer, the ship m/s J.L. Runeberg, built in 1912, and the Royal Line’s waterbuses traffic the route Helsinki-Porvoo. On summer Saturdays you can enjoy a nostalgic tour with the little museum train that puffs its way to Porvoo from the Helsinki railroad station. Another way to discover Porvoo is to take a half-day sightseeing tour with a guide from Helsinki.
For those of us who like classical music, especially contemporary composers, the AVANTI! Summer Music Festival at the end of June offers unforgettable experiences, www.avantimusic.fi.
Join a cruise on one of the sightseeing boats and see the wonderfully beautiful archipelago. During the summer, Saaristolinjat (the Archipelago Lines) have regular tours, but you can also book a private fishing excursion with professional fishermen Erik Herlevi and Bo Uddström. You can obtain further information from the Porvoo Tourist Information, www.kalaopas.info.
From Porvoo the tour continues via E18 or the Old King’s Road 170 to Loviisa. |
