Sibelius

Composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)

Sibelius' Home Ainola in Järvenpää, Southern Finland
Sibelius' Home, Ainola

Half a century after his death in 1957, Jean Sibelius remains the dominant icon of Finnish classical music and a great figure in global terms. His popular seven symphonies are re-recorded and performed regularly in Finland and across the world, and works such as Kullervo, Finlandia and The Swan of Tuonela resonate powerfully in his home country as musical expressions of Finnish melancholy and national identity.

Because of the 50th anniversary of the passing of composer Jean Sibelius , 2007 is an especially appropriate year to visit Finland for music lovers, but most Sibelius-related attractions are permanent fixtures in Finland’s cultural catalogue. "Sibelius - 50 Years On" is the theme for one of the main Sibelius events, the Sibelius Festival 2007 (06.-09.09.2007) in Lahti.

Closer to Helsinki in the town of Järvenpää, you’ll find enchanting Ainola, the lakeside house named after Sibelius’s wife where the couple spent their latter years and where, in the words of the composer himself, “the silence speaks”.

Throughout Finland, of course, you can enjoy and marvel at the vast lakes and forests that acted as inspiration for the great composer’s most memorable work.
