Plassi is a cultural-historical area with buildings e.g. from the nineteenth century.
In the old days Plassi was an important marketplace. The first fair was held there in 1620. As late as at the beginning of the 1860s, more goods were traded at the Kalajoki Fair than at those in southern Finland. The fair tratidion has continued in the Plassi area up to this day, albeit in a rather less significant form. On the second Friday and Saturday of every October, people still assemble at the fair in Plassi.
Later Plassi developed in to residential area for fishermen, craftspeople and sawmill workers. The area is built in a town-like compact fashion; the oldest remaining buildings are from the end of the 18th century. There is a small fishing museum by the present marketplace, in a former quod. On the second Friday and Saturday of every October, people still assemble at the fair in Plassi.Plassi - the old market place and wooden town of Kalajoki
