Shooting the Rapids
In the winter there's a meter or more of snow on the ground. It all melts in April and May, so there's some big water coming down the rivers of northern Finland.
The rapids at Ruunaa in northern Karelia are especially popular. There are similar locations in many other parts of the country, in the Kuusamo area, for example, and in Lapland. For experienced canoeists, the Tornio and Muonio river systems, running for hundreds of kilometers along the western border with Sweden, provide some excellent opportunities for canoeing.
