Cross-country skiing

The entire world is blue and white. The snow is a meter deep and there is not a single cloud in the pale blue sky. The spruce trees are white cones bowed down beneath a mantle of snow. The best way to explore this winter landscape is on cross-country skis. Glide through the silent forest and across a frozen lake. Climb to the top of a hill and then tuck your ski poles under your arms for your reward, a long glide down the other side.

Cross-country skiing is one of Finland's most popular sports. There are tens of thousands of kilometers of marked and well-maintained ski trails in Finland. These include family-friendly trails and more demanding routes for experienced skiers. There are also special ski tours recommended for skiers in top physical condition. Illuminated trails allow you to extend your skiing long into the night. These ski trails are free for all to enjoy.

How cold and dark is it?

The peak season for skiing is February-March in southern and central Finland and March-April in Lapland. In the north-western corner of Lapland - the Kilpisjärvi area - the season extends well into May. You can take lessons in cross-country skiing at major ski centers, where skiing equipment is nearly always available for hire.

During December it is normally about -10 C but can reach - 25 C. These temperatures are perfectly manageable however, with the termal suits and boots provided free of charge by most tour operators. During December there is approximately 4,5 hours of light per day from around 10 a.m. until 2.30 p.m.

The ski trails are free for all to enjoy!

There are family-friendly trails and more demanding trails for experienced skiers, and special ski tours recommended for thrill-seekers in top physical condition. What's more, the ski trails are free for all to enjoy. There can be no more delightful way of exploring the winter landscape than on cross-country skis. To glide through the silent forests or across the treeless slopes of the Arctic hills, with the winter landscapes glittering in their white blanket of snow, is an unforgettable experience. Illuminated trails allow you to extend your skiing pleasure long into the night.

Ylläs, Saariselkä, Levi, and Ruka are best resorts for cross country skiing in Finland.
