Enontekiö is located in the Western part of Lapland, in the "arm" of Finland. It is a municipality of great wilderness areas, reindeers and Saami culture.

The municipality of Enontekiö, founded 1877, is an ancient Saami area, with a tradition of reindeer husbandry. Enontekiö municipality consists of villages, of which the largest is Hetta, where the municipal administration center is located. Kilpisjärvi is a well known village with about 100 permanent inhabitants.

Enontekiö lies at the edge of the northernmost limit of coniferous trees, and roughly one third of the municipality consists of fells. Highest of them, Halti, which is the highest fell in Finland, 1324 m above sea level.

More than 75 % of the region consists of protected nature preserve, a national park and other vast wilderness areas.

Authentic culture

In Enontekiö, you can discover the authentic Lappish culture. Reindeer herding is practiced all over the municipality and you will most probably see some reindeers during your stay in Enontekiö. People living in Enontekiö are generous and they welcome you warmly.

In March there is a Saami cultural weekend organized in Hetta, during which there is traditional joik singing performances, movies, concerts, reindeer racing and of course partying!

In spring time ice-fishing a popular hobby among every Finn. You can also try your luck and even participate to ice-fishing competitions orgazined during one week all over Enontekiö.

Enjoy the nature

Whether you visit Enontekiö in winter or summer, there is always a lot to do in the nature. This is a perfect area for those who enjoy winter sports such as skiing, off-piste skiing, snowmobile safaris or ice-fishing. Husky or reindeer reindeer safaris are exciting ways to get around in the snow-covered Lappish nature.

Those who seek peace and quietness find the untouched wilderness in Enontekiö. There is no noise of traffic or industrial pollution. Take your skis, kick-sled, snow shoes and discover the magical light of Polar Night in January. Let the moon guide you through the quiet paths. Or enjoy the immense luminosity of April when there is plenty of sun shine to give you are real tan!

The numerous rivers and lakes offer for fishermen possibilities to catch for example trout, arctic char, pike, white fish etc. The hiking trails are perfect for many days trekking journey or shorter one trips. If you look for challenges try these trails: Hetta-Pallas 55km or Kilpisjärvi-Halti 55km. Saana and Malla fells in Kilpisjärvi are perfect for day tripping.
