The town of Kemijärvi is situated on a peninsula surrounded by dozens of hills, islands and water. It is a short distance from two national parks and five fell visitor centres.

Good connections and services as well as the large number of places to visit ensure that visitors will have a nice and relaxing stay. Summertime visitors go hiking and camping while wintertime visitors often stay at the fell visitor centres.

There are several different types of cross-country ski terrain (about 69 km with 4.1 km of lit trails) in central Kemijärvi. The Poukama spa and swimming pool is located near the accommodation facilities and near the ski trails.

National parks:

The Pyhä-Luosto National Park features the finest elements of northern Finnish nature. The Pyhätunturi Visitor Centre is about 48 km from Kemijärvi, served by bus connections all year round. Luosto boasts the only active amethyst mine in Europe, located about an hour's drive (72 km) from Kemijärvi. Promoting ecological tourism has been a priority at Pyhä-Luosto for more than 25 years.

The Oulanka National Park offers visitors an opportunity to become acquainted with riverside flora and fauna. The visitor centre is about 117 km from Kemijärvi, and there's a bus service to Ruka.

Pyhä-Luosto. About 45 minutes' drive. Suomu. About 30 minutes' drive. Salla. About an hour's drive. Ruka. Less than 1.5 hours' drive.

Village destinations: Luusua-Juujärvi-Raajärvi. Starts about 26 km from Kemijärvi. Unique visitor destinations. Suvanto village. About 73 km from Kemijärvi. The only village in Lapland that was spared in the wars.

Travel connections:

The night train from Helsinki arrives in Kemijärvi in the morning and departs for Helsinki in the evening.

The nearest airport is in Rovaniemi, which is about an hour's drive from Kemijärvi. Another airport is located in Kuusamo.

Bus services from Kemijärvi to Pyhä-Luosto run daily all year round. In the winter, bus services from Kemijärvi to Suomu run daily. Bus services to Salla run several times a week. In the summer, bus services to Salla run several times a week and in the winter at least on business days.
