Cabins and cottages are an essential element in Finnish life. Forgetting the daily grind is inevitable in retreats amidst the country's greatest resource: rugged natural beauty. Heat up the lakeside sauna in the summer or get cosy in front of the fireplace in the winter, rest and revitalisation are guaranteed.

Long summer nights are best spent on the porch of a cottage, having a relaxing drink with family and friends. Throw away your clocks, forget about to-do-lists and let the endless sunlight recharge your batteries.
 
Finns have an inherent yearning to nature. Only five decades ago, most of Finland's population lived in the countryside and worked in traditional trades connected to their surroundings. These days, towns and cities are the most populous areas and people stay in touch with their rural roots by escaping to cottages and cabins at weekends.
 
Lakeside cottages are the ideal way for Finns to get away from modern life and have some time to breathe freely and listen to themselves think. Sweating off the stress in a sauna with regular cooling dips in the lake is the ultimate way to purify both body and mind, and sessions might go on for hours.
 
Nowadays luxury cottages are available throughout the country and are an extremely popular way to spend holidays. However, many prefer a more traditional approach and seek themselves to smaller cabins with stripped-down amenities that are usually located further away from everything.
 

Cottage life is often combined with activities such as hiking, fishing, mountain biking, mushroom and berry picking – anything you can think of in the vast forests and water areas Finland is famous for.
