Sammaljoki Church

Free

In 1828, the residents of Sammaljoki and nearby villages in Southern Tyrvää petitioned the Turku Cathedral Chapter for permission to build their own preaching house and cemetery, citing the long distance to Tyrvää Church in Kalliala. Permission was granted, and the first church was consecrated in 1834.

In the early 1900s, the people of Sammaljoki dreamed of becoming an independent parish, but the plan was rejected by Tyrvää Parish and denied by the Cathedral Chapter.

During the Civil War in 1918, the church burned down, along with much of the area’s buildings.

The current idyllic wooden church was designed by architect Ilmari Launis and completed in 1924. The altar features a sculpture of Christ on the Cross by Paavo Hakala.

The Sammaljoki preaching house congregation was dissolved in 1946, after which the church and cemetery were transferred to Tyrvää Parish.
