Kirsi Neuvonen – sensescape / sense ● scape

Jyväskylä Art Museum, 16 May – 6 September 2026

Beloved printmaker Kirsi Neuvonen (b. 1960, Keuruu) is a pioneer of Finnish colour printmaking. Her richly coloured works draw on art and cultural history. A major solo exhibition at the Jyväskylä Art Museum presents different periods, themes and techniques from her five-decade career.

The exhibition title reflects a personal dimension: each individual’s own emotional world (sensescape). When separated into two words — sense ● scape — the phrase expands into a broader reflection on the surrounding world in which we live.

The exhibition is organised into five thematic sections, including early 1980s pieces, a forest installation at children’s height, dress motifs, and recent monotypes. Neuvonen’s oeuvre features references to art history, female figures, fairy-tale-like scenes, and playful girlhood motifs. Her multilayered works often include humour and narrative elements, inviting viewers to expand the stories through their own experiences. “Art history is my main source of inspiration, alongside fashion, design, architecture and natural history,” she explains. Recurring motifs include trees, dresses, and human figures, often positioned symmetrically.

After graduating from the Lahti School of Art, Neuvonen moved to Jyväskylä in 1984, where she developed innovative colour techniques in metal printmaking, earning the State Art Prize in 1987. Her work includes series such as Luontopolku (“Nature Trail”), reinterpreting Finnish classics, and Jumalaisia naisia (“Divine Women”), inspired by ancient goddesses. Since 2016, she has produced monotypes using water-soluble intaglio inks with pencil and chalk, often featuring girls and dresses.

Neuvonen also founded her own studio and gallery in Jyväskylä, and her works are held in Finnish museums and private collections. The exhibition is supported by the Finnish Heritage Agency.
