Did you know it's possible to follow the steps of an 18th century international expedition in the forests of Pello?
The French mathematician and astronomer Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis traveled in the Tornio River Valley in 1736 – 1737 with his international crew making measurements of the Earth. The significance of the expedition is widely recognized and it has left its mark on the storytelling of the Tornio River valley.
The Maupertuis Memorial was erected up on the Kittisvaara Hill in 1956. Climb up the short trail and go see the stone triangle!
