Bastion Ungern and Rosen

Gratis

In the center of Lovisa you will find Lovisa's land fortification and the Rosen and Ungern bastions. The destination is free of charge and open all year round.

The town of Degerby was founded in 1745 at the bottom of Degerbyviken, which in 1752 was renamed Lovisa after Queen Lovisa Ulrika. A fortress was needed to reinforce the city.

Construction work began in 1748 and the fortification work was led by Augustin Ehrensvärd, who also designed Suomenlinna fortress near Helsinki. Lovisa's fortress was supposed to surround the entire city, but only a fraction of the plans were realized. The Rosen and Ungern bastions on both sides of the King's Road and the earthworks belonging to them were almost completed. The bastions of the fortress were named after the then Governor General of Finland G. Rosen and General von Ungern.
