The jewels of Finnish design

The renewal of the Vaakuna hotel in Helsinki is complete – the hotel’s design and views mesmerise travellers

The three-year renewal of the Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, located in the heart of Helsinki, has now been completed. Vaakuna attracts customers with classic Finnish design and rooms with balconies. The views over the city centre rooftops are thrilling even for those familiar with Helsinki. All of the hotel’s 340 rooms, restaurant, lobby, as well as meeting and event premises, were modernised during a three-year project that was accomplished in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency. The renovated hotel forms a unified and harmonic picture in great functionalist style.

The Vaakuna hotel were completed for the Olympic Games in 1952, and the building was designed by  architect, functionalist Erkki Huttunen. Paavo Tynell, who is one of the most internationally famous Finnish designers, designed the light fixtures of Vaakuna. They are still widely used in the hotel and in the restaurant on the 10th floor. The hotel’s perhaps best kept secret, or less known speciality, are the ninth floor rooms with their own private balconies. The balconies have beautiful views in different directions. In summer, these rooms are especially pleasant, as you can dine or enjoy your morning coffee, for example, on your own balcony.
