Annikki Kariniemi was the first published female author from Lapland and one of the few women to write wilderness stories. She lived from 1913 to 1984. The statue honors the women of Lapland and Annikki Kariniemi in particular.

The statue was sculpted by Ensio Seppänen and it was erected in Aavasaksa in 1990.
