The artist homes of Lake Tuusula

A unique community of artists formed on the shores of Lake Tuusula in early 1900’s. The best known representatives of the golden age of Finnish art settled in the rural area, where the Finnish national writer Aleksis Kivi had lived the last few months of his life.


On the shores of Lake Tuusula you can walk on the footsteps of the golden age masters. The golden age of Finnish art is brought to life at home museums which take the visitor back to the heyday of the Finnish Romantic era at the turn of the 20th century.


Two of the artist homes, Halosenniemi and Erkkola, are open year-round. Ainola - delightful home of national composer Jean Sibelius, Ahola, Suviranta and Aleksis Kivi memorial cottage are open from May to September. All six artist homes are located within 5 km from each other.


In addition to historical and cultural artist homes, Lake Tuusula area offers museums for those interested in military history. For those interested in Alvar Aalto architecture, a visit to Villa Kokkonen, is a must.
