The Peltolan Mäkitupalais Museum is the only genuine Mäkitupalais settlement worldwide where the buildings are in their original places. The museum area has been designated as a nationally significant cultural environment and historical heritage site.

There are a total of 19 log buildings and approximately 3000 artefacts in the area. The oldest building in the area, ‘Isotupa,’ was built in the 18th century.

Mäkitupa (hill cottage) was owned by the landowner and mäkitupalais-people only rented the cottage and a small patch of land around it by working for the landowner. This system was in use in Finland from the early 18th century to the early 20th century.
