Tyrnävä Church

Designed by the Provincial Architect of Oulu, Frans Wilhelm Lüchow, the wooden Neo-Gothic church of Tyrnävä was completed in 1873 and consecrated in 1881. This elegant structure is the third church to stand in the area, following its predecessors built at the Ängeslevä church site (first mentioned in 1647) and later on the banks of the Tyrnävä River (1664–1865).


The church’s altarpiece, painted in 1907 by artist Toivo Johannes Tuhkanen, depicts the Virgin Mary in white robes, seated before the stable with the infant Jesus in her arms. The artwork was donated to the congregation by the family of Adolf Castrén, Tyrnävä Parish’s first vicar.


Church is open to visitors:

June 2 – July 31, 2025

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays

12:00–16:00
