The museum’s permanent exhibition is a trip through time, from the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1960s, telling the history of Kuoloyarvi (Finnish: Kuolajärvi) i.e. Salla. The name of the municipality was changed to Salla in 1936. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the outdoor exhibition area of the museum can be visited, which highlights traditional livelihoods and the wartime, as well as local superstitions with the help of the Elfland tour. The Salla Museum has a café and museum shop. The Rajakievari tavern is located in the yard of the museum and it also functions as a venue for events and private bookings. The Rajakievari tavern exhibits tavern traditions and is also a space for changing exhibitions.
A UNESCO World Heritage site Verla groundwood and board mill on the Verlankoski rapids is quite simply unique. The mill has been the heart of its village since the 1870s, first as a working mill and since 1972 as a museum.
