Neitvuori Hill and Hiidenmaa Routes

Gratis

Neitvuori mountain is one of highest scenic spots in Southern Savo. With its peak rising 110 meters above the waters of Lake Saimaa, Neitvuori offers hikers a breathtaking view over the Luonteri archipelago. Known as the magnificent guardian and symbol of Hiidenmaa Routes, Neitvuori was formerly called Hiidenvuori mountain. Legend has it that during the Great Wrath a young maiden plunged to her doom from the top of the mountain while trying to escape from Russian invaders, which resulted in the mountain getting its new name Neitvuori ("Maiden Mountain"). The old name of the mountain is still reflected in the names of many other places in the area.

Hiidenmaa hiking routes offer numerous paths to pick from to suit all nature enthusiasts. Those looking for a short scenic hike can take the Hiijje Silimukka, which is only a few kilometers long, while those looking for something more challenging can choose to take on the 12 km Hiidenkierros path. Hikers taking the Hiidensilmukka can take a break at the Hiidenkota shelter, where there's also a fire pit. During summer months there are also several tempting swimming spots along the path where tired hikers can cool off and enjoy the clean waters of Lake Saimaa.

Neitvuori and Hiidenmaa hiking routes are located 35-43 kilometers to the east of Mikkeli. Travelers can either take road 62 that goes to Anttola and Puumala, or road 5 from Rahula north of Mikkeli to get to the area. Taking road 62, there is a signpost about 24 km from Mikkeli pointing to Kokkosenlahti, Neitvuori, while traveling along road 5 there is a Kokkosenlahti signpost about 12 km from Mikkeli.
