Kärnäkoski fortress lies in the traditional landscapes on the beautiful Saimaa isthmus next to the rapids connecting Lake Saimaa and Lake Kuolimo. More than 200 years old fortress was built as a part of Russia’s outermost fortress chain against Sweden. The rocks needed to build the fortress were collected from surrounding countryside.
