Mariehamn is the capital of the Åland Islands, an autonomous and unilingually Swedish province of Finland.
Åland consists of 6 700 named islands in the middle of the Baltic Sea, between the Finnish and Swedish mainlands.
Mariehamn is easily reached from both Sweden and Finland by ferry or by plane. There is also a ferry connection to Estonia. Local travel on Åland is convenient because of the short distances, making all the essentials reachable within a short time.
True Maritime Culture
Thanks to its excellent premises for meetings, Åland is the perfect destination for conference and group tours. Outside the conference room, there’s much to see and experience in the form of activities, culture and sights.
The maritime and tourist industries are central to the Åland economy. In the summer, around 40 ferries depart from ports in Åland to Sweden and the Finnish mainland.
Charming island capital
Other important industries in Åland are shipping, trade, banking, farming and food industry. Shipping has always been especially important for Åland and no other industry has had such influence on local life.
On Åland, Mariehamn is the centre for industry and politics. During the summer months, it is a lively tourist town but still holds plenty of small town charm.
Scores of natural and historic sights
Mariehamn is a town to stroll in. It’s small enough to save your feet from blisters but there’s still plenty to see and shop. Founded by the Russian Czar Alexander in 1861, old quarters and buildings have been preserved although the centre of town has been modernized.
Åland is an island world where the sea is always present. The virgin nature of the archipelago offers many opportunities for recreation and excursions. Besides the untouched archipelago, the beautiful red bedrock, worn smooth by the inland ice, is a typical natural feature on Åland.
Some more of Åland’s distinctive traits include tall maypoles during the midsummer festivities, colourful garlands and traditional windmills.
